A 2020 research study found that Lyme bacteria can weaken your immune system. A weak immune system can lead to frequent sickness, chronic aching, and an inability to clear factors that cause inflammation.
There are ways you can support your immune system at home to ease Chronic Lyme Disease symptoms.
Key ways to support your immune system at home are to:
· Eat more anti-inflammatory and nutrient rich foods - transition away from inflammatory foods like fatty processed meats, cheese and refined sugars.
· Perform appropriate exercise
· Practice stress management
Consuming foods that are anti-inflammatory are key to strengthening your immune system. A 2021 article, https://www.nature.com/articles/s41584-021-00648-5, found that inflammation can lead to increases in Lyme symptoms and even cause Lyme arthritis. Another 2020 article, https://www.mdpi.com/2072-6643/12/6/1562 , found that anti-inflammatory and nutrient-rich diets strengthen your immune system.
· Eat a variety of fruits and vegetables to get essential vitamins
· Whole grains for fiber
· Nuts, olive oil, and fish for healthy fats
· Legumes and fish for good protein
· Incredibly low or no amount of dairy and red meat
Exercise is another key to supporting your immune system and ease your symptoms.
A 2015 article, https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/25899100/, found that light resistance exercise helps patients with Chronic Lyme Disease feel healthy and full of energy. The Mayo Clinic recommends that low-impact exercise, like walking or light yoga, can protect your joints and reduce pain.
Exercise is also known to reverse inflammation and reduce stress.
Stress management is another key to improving your health. Being able to manage your stress can reduce the level of stress hormones that increase inflammation. You can manage your stress by:
· Exercising
· Practicing meditation
· Performing slow breathing exercises
· Finding mental health support through your doctor
My journey of the experiences of Lyme disease started in 2007 with unexplained symptoms. I am grateful to have been guided to a Naturopath in Maine that had Lyme disease and inspired me to take herbal supplements for my recovery. We did the Western Blot test and I tested positive for Bartonella, Babesia and Ehrlichia. At that point, I continued with the herbal supplements until my symptoms went away, approx. 7 months. Thankfully, I followed a clean plant rich diet and was just beginning my holistic education so meditation, energy work, yoga, and Ayurveda were a part of my every day and I focused on keeping my stress levels low.
Over the following years, I have gained a rich depth of understanding for the root cause of Lyme Disease and how to improve ones cellular wellness returning the body to balance. Moving to North Carolina in 2014, set off a cascade of stress in which a relapse of lyme occurred. My gut health and thyroid were compromised greatly. Another journey began to unfold, I met Dr. Bill Rawls and his daughter, founders of Vital Plan, a company with a passion for helping others with Lyme Disease through education and herbal supplements. A blessing, I am grateful for.
Dr. Bill Rawls, Medical Director of Vital Plan, experienced Lyme Disease himself and through his work he developed a powerful offering of diet, lifestyle and herbal supplements that assisted him in his recovery and now reaches out to support others with this difficult and complicated disease. Since 2016, I have had the privilege of being trained by him and provide expertise to many through health coaching with Vital Plan and now my own practice. Lyme disease challenges every system of the body; cellular health, microbiome, gut health, fatigue, brain fog, joint discomfort, EBV, neurological, interstitial cystitis, thyroid and much more. My work allows me to support others in rebalancing their microbiome while reviving cellular health.
When an integration of a wide variety of lifestyle practices are applied into one’s life, recovery happens quicker and provides for a healthier life on all levels of Being. Managing your stress levels, eating a whole foods/plant based diet, clean water, clear air, sleep, exercise, etc. all play a factor in your recovery.
